WSLS has confirmed through a Roanoke Regional Airport spokeswoman that a small plane with two people onboard crashed into the UPS Freight building, near the airport this afternoon.

The Airport says the small private plane, a Piper PA46 was trying to land, had problems, and was in contact with the Control Tower. The aircraft had departed from Roanoke airport, reported trouble and tried to return to the airport. At that time the low flying plane clipped some power lines before crashing just shy of the UPS Freight building.

 The FAA is reporting there were two people in the plane, the passenger was injured but the pilot was not. One person was found about 100 feet from the wreckage when emergency crews arrived. Both have been transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and one is reported to be in critical condition.

 According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the fixed wing single-engine plane is registered to Aviation Development Group Inc. of Charlottesville.

 Press Release from the Roanoke Regional Airport: Roanoke, Virginia – There has been an aircraft incident near the airport. Currently, aircraft rescue efforts are underway. 

At approximately 12:50 p.m., a Piper PA46 aircraft with two souls on board attempted to take off at the Roanoke Regional Airport. The pilot called the air traffic control tower for emergency assistance. The plane at that point appears to have hit the UPS freight facility on the North Side of Peters Creek Road.

Airport Fire and Rescue Team as well as Roanoke County and Roanoke City have responded to the incident. The airfield was shut down for ten minutes, but is currently open. There is no information at this time on injuries that may or may not have been sustained on the aircraft or at the facility. The Virginia State Police and Roanoke County will be conducting a briefing on the incident in 10 minutes at the corner of Peters Creek and Valley Pointe Road.
