Tropical Storm Alex

Tropical Storm Alex

Tropical Storm Alex

A tropical storm warning is in force for the coast of Belize and the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, which separates the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico.Somewhere between 69 million and 132 million gallons of crude oil into the water from the lower platform horizons twentieth April spilled exploded killing 11 workers.

Strengthening tropical storm Alex is expected to remain near or under a large ridge of high pressure, resulting in a very favorable environment for further development with a vertical wind shear of light. It would be good news for those who work the oil spill from BP in the northern Gulf of Mexico, although the system can produce a rough sea in the region.

More good news for South Florida: In contrast to previous reports, Alex should not occur in a storm, at least not today.

A large tornado hit Yazoo City in west-central Mississippi Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Numerous buildings in the twister’s path were destroyed. A NWS spokesman says the tornado was 3/4 of a mile wide. It hit the Mississippi cities of Valley Park, Yazoo City and Durant.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn says officials in three counties were conducting a “massive response.” Jim Pollard, public affairs manager for American Medical Response ambulance service, told the Associated Press the company dispatched 11 ambulances to Yazoo City. He says one person with significant injuries was airlifted to a Jackson hospital.

Roy Wilson, the fire chief of Yazoo City, told CNN that 20 to 30 homes were destroyed in a nearby city. Wilson said some people were trapped inside some structures. He said he didn’t yet have confirmed numbers on injuries.

“It’s in pretty bad shape so far,” he told CNN of the city.

I gotta tell you, people always say how dangerous it is to live in California, with all the earthquakes and wildfires. But I’ll take that over tornados any day. I lived in Georgia for two years, and the threat of tornados was a constant for months on end. People were losing their homes all the time. I hope the folks in Mississippi are OK.

Space Shuttle Landing

Space Shuttle Discovery won’t be landing today. Low-lying clouds and scattered showers kept the space agency from landing the shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center.

The crew will have four chances to land on Tuesday, two in Florida and two at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The ship has enough supplies for the seven-member crew to stay in orbit until Wednesday.

The first landing attempt tomorrow morning is at 7:33 a.m. Eastern Time. Forecasters say the weather should be slightly better than it was for today.

Fireball In Sky

Viewers reported seeing all sorts of colors and one big blast followed by several smaller blasts. WISN Chief Meteorologist Mark Baden said people from as far away as Iowa and Ohio saw the fireball which was likely a meteor.

“A meteor is a rock, hurdling through space, as it hits our atmosphere it becomes super heated because of friction and this would normally cause the rock to explode and that would create the big flash, visible for hundreds of miles,” Baden said.

“A meteor of this size is pretty unusual,” Baden added.

Local police departments fielded dozens of phone calls. Dispatchers from Muskego, New Berlin and Waukesha told 12 News they searched for a possible impact site but didn’t find one.

Sunday’s Goody’s 500 Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway has been postponed until noon Monday due to heavy rain. The race will be broadcast live on Fox. Kevin Harvick, the series points leader, will start on the pole. Matt Kenseth starts second.

Denny Hamlin, who was scheduled to have surgery Monday to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, will have his surgery postponed until Wednesday.  NASCAR has postponed its race at Martinsville Speedway to Monday afternoon because of rain. Showers lingered over the track in southwest Virginia on Sunday, and the absence of lights for night racing meant the window for racing was closing quickly.

NASCAR does not allow a race to start unless it’s feasible for the entire event to be run, and races on the shortest, oldest track in the Sprint Cup Series can take up to 4 hours.

The call to postpone was made about 90 minutes after the scheduled 1 p.m. start.

First Day Of Spring 2010

First Day Of Spring 2010

The first day of Spring 2010 is here! The official start to the first day of the new season is technically at 1:32pm EST, but who’s counting? Springtime is upon us with some nice sunny weather, pretty flowers, and lots of birds chirping and animals coming out of hibernation.

The first day of Spring is marked by the Vernal Equinox, which means the sun is supposed to sit exactly vertical above the equator. This happens twice a year: once in the spring, and once in the late fall, usually toward the end of September. But, it doesn’t happen for a whole day or anything — just an instant.

Weather in lots of the US is warm and sunny to reflect the start of Spring, but unfortunately not every place is so lucky. Snowstorms are expected to hit the Southern plains, bringing lots of powdery white to Kansas and Oklahoma.
